On Top of the World
Day 71
March 21, 2013
On a recent trip to the Big Island, I really looked forward to going up the mountain of Mauna Kea to see the vibrant stars. This view from the Mauna Kea on the the Big Island shows the plants growing on the sparse land. The mountain in the top left is Mauna Loa, the tallest mountain on earth from its base 16,400 ft under the ocean to its summit at 13,678 ft above sea level. Even though the stars were spectacular, this view captivated me the most. I was above the clouds.sunsetplantsMauna KeamountainvolcanocloudstopexplorephotodayHawaii
Through the Clouds
Day 71
March 21, 2013
I went up Mauna Kea when I was on the big island. I wanted to get a photo of the stars silhouetting the tree. When night set, there was a thin clouds in the sky. The moon shining through the clouds made it even harder to see the stars I had gone to see. The moonlight diffusing through the thin layer of clouds with stars shining through wasn't what I was looking for, but it is a cool picture.Under the Breaking Surface
Day 72
March 22, 2013
I went snorkeling in the bay across from my hotel room. The surf was higher than a few days before. The waves pushed be back and forth, making it hard to get good pictures. In this picture, some convict tang swim near the rocks where the high surf is crashing.
